Accessories for Vertical Slab Gel Systems

Gel Cassette Sealer -

This patented, revolutionary new leak-proof gasket seals the glass plate sandwich for gel casting quickly and easily. Set-up for slab gel casting can be accomplished in less than one minute as shown in the above series of photos. This technique is extremely useful for mini-vertical and vertical slab gels, sequencing gels, and perpendicular gradient gels (for DGGE). This long-lasting silicone gasket can be reused many times and is available in 6 color-coded thicknesses to pour gels 0.5mm, 0.75mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, or 3.0mm thick.

Gel Cassette Sealer is designed to perform two functions simultaneously - it holds onto the back glass plate making it simple to handle, and it seals the spacers. Its basic shape is a "U" with a hollow compressible tubing attached (see photo on page 36). The "U" shape friction fits around the perimeter of the 1/8" back glass plate holding the gasket in place, while the attached tubing surrounds the spacers and acts as a leak-proof barrier once the top glass plate is clamped into place. The bottom corners of the back glass plate must be rounded for use with Gel Cassette Sealer to ensure the gasket's ability to negotiate the corners while main-taining a leak-proof seal.

Other major manufacturers have gone to expensive and complex clamping systems to solve the problems associated with gel casting. Sooner Scientific offers Gel Cassette Sealer as an easy-to-use, leak-proof alternative that combines ingenuity with simplicity. Gel Cassette Sealer is the perfect complement to our full line of gel systems that feature the quality, simplicity, and value that is our tradition. Uncomplicated gel systems no longer need to be associated with time consuming or messy gel casting set-up procedures such as agarose seals, grease, silicone tubing, or tape.

Gel Cassette Sealer is provided without extra charge when ordering vertical slab gel systems in the Kit format. It may also be ordered independently for use with previously purchased Sooner Scientific equipment, or with many other manufacturers equipment.

Photo at right shows how the Gel Cassette Sealer friction fits the back glass plate while simultaneously providing a leak-proof barrier for the spacer. Available in 6 color coded thicknesses - 0.5mm and 0.75mm (yellow), 1.0mm (red), 1.5mm (blue) 2.0mm (purple), and 3.0mm (white).

Combs and Spacers - COMBS
Combs for protein gels are made from virgin Teflon and are precision-machined to assure even thickness and equal size of sample wells. These combs are easy to remove from stacking gels and leave clean, crisp sample wells. Combs are available in six thicknesses (0.75mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm, and 6.0mm) and are offered with 1, 2, 3 (two larger lanes and one center marker lane or three wells of equal size), 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 20, 29, or 30 teeth. The 14 and 29-well combs can be loaded with a multi-channel pipettor. Thinner polycarbonate combs for sequencing are available in thicknesses of 0.2mm, 0.4mm, or 0.5mm and with the same selection of wells as listed above.

SPACERS
Precision-machined PVC spacers for protein gels eliminate the need for greased seals and are unbreakable. Spacer sets consist of 2 side spacers (bottom spacer is optional) and may be ordered for six gel thicknesses (0.75mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm, and 6.0mm) and for gel lengths of 145mm, 220mm, 280mm, and 400mm. Gel Cassette Sealerof the appropriate thickness is recommended for use with these spacer sets to eliminate the need for agarose sealing of gel plates. Polycarbonate spacers for sequencing gels are available with thicknesses of 0.2mm, 0.4mm, or 0.5mm.

Glass Plates, Bar Clamps and White Clamps - GLASS PLATES
Glass plate sets consist of a notched glass plate made from durable 3/16" glass and a back plate. Precision-notched and beveled front plates are also available for two-dimensional runs. Glass plate sets are offered for 145mm, 170mm, 190mm, 220mm, 280mm, and 400mm gel lengths. All glass plates are edge sanded and polished for safety and durability.

BAR CLAMPS
Sooner Scientific offers a clear acrylic bar clamp for the vertical slab gel units. This clamp evenly compresses the glass plate sandwich to the upper reservoir gasket, replacing the side spring clamps. (Smaller version of the sequencing bar clamp shown on page 10.)

WHITE CLAMPS
Molded polypropylene spring clamps are now available for use with the Vertical Slab Gel Systems. These clamps feature stainless steel springs and were designed specifically for these units. Additional clamps can be ordered.
